Remote Sensing and Unsupervised Classification

  • Remote Sensing and Air Photo Interpretation (Spring 2024)

While taking my Remote Sensing course, I saw an Instagram post about how Ashburn’s population has exploded in recent years, and the suburban area has expanded greatly. When it came time for my final project, that came to mind. These two maps are the result of that.

I used Landsat data from 1990 and 2023 to create color composite images of the area around Dulles Airport. Then, I was able to use unsupervised classification to categorize the land cover into one of five chosen categories.

This allowed me to look at all the changes in land cover between any of the categories and allowed me to quantify, say, how much grassland has disappeared in this area during the last 23 years (a loss of 46.24%).
